Is Eminem Or His Ego Slim Shady - 2234 Words

Eminem. The name is internationally known, almost notoriously, and for good reason. Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem or his alter ego Slim Shady has outsold every other artist in a still predominately African American genre, rap (Allison, 2002). Not only that, he’s one of the highest selling artists in any genre as a male solo artist. This feat is even more impressive when you consider the fact that his body of work, especially once he first got big was very controversial with critics stating that he was homophobic, sexist, and outright offensive (White, 2006). If you were a teenager growing up in the late 1990’s there was barely one as â€Å"hot† as Eminem in terms of hype and popularity. He has won several Grammy awards as well as an Academy Award (Calhoun, 2005) – quite impressive considering his slow rise to fame and humble beginnings. Today, there is no shortage of white rappers to listen to, and recently some have had decent success such as Yelawolf, Machine Gun Kelly and Mac Miller, but no other Caucasian rapper has had nearly the impact Eminem has had. His fame came when he was nearing his 30’s, but his rise to super stardom came rapidly once he was introduced to a wider audience. White rappers at the time didn’t exactly have the best reputation. The biggest white rapper, really, until then was another notorious artist – Vanilla Ice. Best known for his huge hit â€Å"Ice Ice Baby†.
